FG clears air on planned 100 per cent increment of minimum wage

The Federal Government refuted reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu would announce a wage award to workers on Independence Day, terming the information as false.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, emphasized the inaccuracy of the reports in a statement released on Wednesday, relayed by Mr. Olajide Oshundun, the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour.

Lalong urged the public to disregard the misleading report, asserting that it was a fabrication intended to align with undisclosed interests.

“The attention of the Ministry of Labour and Employment has been drawn to reports circulating online claiming that the President will announce wage awards and palliatives to workers during his October 1st Independence Day speech,” stated Lalong.

He clarified, “The report, which is said to have emanated from a purported interview with the Director of Information in the ministry, claimed that a last-minute meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday between the Federal Government and Labour to avert the proposed strike.”

Lalong added that the Director of Information at the ministry does not have the authority to speak on behalf of the President, debunking the alleged disclosure attributed to the Director.
