The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State to allow urgent repairs on a damaged section of the runway.

This was disclosed in a statement released Saturday morning by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Obiageli Orah.

According to Orah, a significant rupture was discovered in the asphalt surface at a critical portion of the runway, necessitating immediate intervention. The emergency repairs are scheduled to take place from April 22 to May 6, 2025.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, FAAN has closed the runway during this period,” the statement read.

FAAN emphasized that the decision aligns with its commitment to ensuring passenger safety and enhancing airport infrastructure. During the repair period, the runway will be closed to all flight operations, including landings and takeoffs.

Orah appealed to travellers, stakeholders, and airport users to remain patient and cooperative, noting that flights originally scheduled for Enugu will be diverted to nearby airports. She also apologized for the short notice, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the unexpected development.

The closure comes shortly after Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s leading carriers, suspended its flights to the airport due to ongoing safety concerns related to the deteriorating infrastructure.

The rehabilitation project is part of FAAN’s broader effort to modernize aviation facilities across the country and maintain high safety standards.
