FG threatens to shut down 2nd Niger Bridge

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the recent vandalization and theft of metal components from the Second Niger Bridge. The authorities fear that if the destructive acts continue, the bridge may have to be shut down, severely impacting vehicular activities.

Mr. Mahmuda Mamman, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, visited the bridge on Sunday to assess the extent of the damage caused by the miscreants. He emphasized the importance of intensifying surveillance on the bridge to curtail the activities of these vandals who target the metal components.

The Second Niger Bridge is a significant infrastructure investment by the Federal Government, aimed at improving the movement of goods and services in the country. Mr. Mamman emphasized that free movement is a fundamental human right, and protecting this bridge is a collective responsibility.

He called on security agencies to increase their efforts in safeguarding the bridge and also urged the host communities to play a role in protecting this national asset. The miscreants’ focus on metal components poses a severe threat to the bridge’s functionality, and immediate action is required to prevent further damage.

Addressing concerns about the project’s completion delay, Mr. Mamman revealed that security concerns were the major challenge faced by the contractor, Julius Berger. However, he expressed hope that with increased security measures, the project could be completed within the next three weeks.

In the meantime, the construction company is actively maintaining the bridge, and efforts are underway to replace the vandalized components before the bridge’s final handover. Safeguarding this crucial infrastructure is paramount to ensure the safety and well-being of the public and the nation as a whole.
