The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has assured Nigerian workers that the national minimum wage will be reviewed within the next two years.
Onyejeocha made this statement on Thursday in Umuahia during a meeting with labor leaders in Abia State.
She reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare and emphasized that the administration is focused on fulfilling its promise of regular minimum wage reviews.
“We will no longer allow the minimum wage review to be delayed for too long. While it used to be reviewed every five years, we are now committed to reviewing it in three years, with the next review due in less than two years,” Onyejeocha explained.
Recall that in July 2024, President Tinubu approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage and pledged to review it every three years.
Onyejeocha, a native of Abia State, described her meeting with labor leaders as a courtesy visit after spending the holiday season in her home state. She called for a year of peace and collaboration between labor and government, stressing that a strike-free year would foster productivity.
“I reminded them that peace is crucial for productivity, and working together in partnership with the government will benefit everyone,” she added.
The Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogbomna Okoro, praised the minister’s efforts, calling her achievements a source of pride for the labor movement.
“We are proud of her and will continue to work together to ensure workers’ welfare,” Okoro affirmed.
