Two individuals were reportedly trapped inside a three-story building under construction that collapsed on Tuesday evening in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital. The incident occurred at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
During a search and rescue operation, one person was rescued and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, while another person remains trapped inside the collapsed building.
A laborer who escaped the collapse recounted that he evaded danger because he went to wash his hands. “I was loading a bag of stones, and the owner of the house was here with me, telling me to pack it very well. He had just finished paying us.”
Channels Television reported that only one person, who is mute, was still trapped inside at the time of reporting, while the other individual had been rescued and taken to the hospital.
“The building did not give any sign that it was about to collapse. I was lucky because my tools were inside. I just decided to wash my hands before going back inside to collect my tools,” the laborer explained.
Ebonyi Police spokesperson DSP Joshua Ukandu confirmed via chat that operatives and officials from the state Ministry of Works and Capital Development Authority were still on-site, working to rescue the trapped laborer.
Meanwhile, the second trapped person was later rescued late at night and taken to the hospital.
