England midfielder Lauren James has been dealt a crushing blow after being handed a red card during the intense clash against Nigeria. As a result, James will be forced to sit out the remainder of the 2023 tournament.

The pivotal moment occurred when the scores were deadlocked at 0-0 in the 70th minute. In a highly contentious incident, James was sent off for an unnecessary stamp on Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie. Initially shown a yellow card, the referee’s decision was later overturned after consulting the VAR on-pitch monitor, leading to a red card for the English midfielder.

Despite being reduced to 10 players for the entirety of extra time, England showcased their fighting spirit and determination, ultimately securing a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout.

Unfortunately for James, her actions on the field come with severe consequences. FIFA rules explicitly state that dismissals for violent conduct result in a mandatory three-match suspension. As a result, James will have to watch from the sidelines as her teammates continue their quest for Women’s World Cup glory.
