FIFA president Gianni Infantino has rejected the proposed plan to introduce a “blue card” in football, following reports that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) had approved trials for it.
The potential introduction of the blue card would have marked the first significant change to the traditional yellow and red cards system, which has been in place since the 1970 World Cup.
However, in response to the immediate backlash against the plans, Infantino clarified to Sky UK that such a card does not exist in FIFA’s considerations.
“Blue cards? This is a topic that is non-existent for us,” Infantino stated emphatically.
He added, “If you want a headline, it is: red card to the blue card. No chance, no way.”
