Fight against Insurgency: How two Nigerian soldiers were killed in a roadside mine explosion

Two Nigerian soldiers were on Saturday, in the restive northeast near the border with the Republic of Cameroon were killed in a roadside mine explosion as troops repelled a jihadist attack on a base in the region.

A military source who spoke in confidence said military convoy on patrol near the town of Gamboru in Borno state hit a mine planted by Boko Haram insurgents, killing two soldiers and injuring one other.

According to the source, “Around 8:15am on Saturday, (07:15 GMT), our men on patrol between Logomani and Gamboru encountered an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, buried along the road which killed one soldier and injured another”.

Another source narrates, “A platoon from Forward Operation Base in Logomani hit a mine along the Gamboru road.

He said, “Two soldiers died and one was injured”.

It was gathered that a faction loyal to a long-time Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, is known to operate in the area.

Boko Haram insurgents targeted troops on patrol by planting mines on their path.

Recall that last October, two Nigerian soldiers were killed and a dozen others wounded in two separate mine explosions targeting military patrols in the northeast.
