Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has issued a strong message to defender Harry Maguire, calling on him to prove himself and fight for his spot on the team after being stripped of the captaincy.
Maguire, who had been the club’s captain since January 2020 under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, recently saw the captain’s armband pass to Bruno Fernandes under Ten Hag’s leadership.
This change in leadership has sparked rumors of a potential departure for Maguire from Old Trafford. However, Ten Hag has made it clear that the English center-back remains a crucial member of the squad.
“We respect Harry. He’s very important for this squad, for this team,” Ten Hag emphasized, as reported by Metro UK.
Highlighting the significance of consistency, the manager stressed the importance of having a competitive and versatile squad. Ten Hag expressed his satisfaction with having four exceptional center-backs in the team, including Maguire, and emphasized the need for players to compete for their positions.
“He has to fight for his place, as he did last year. He has a high potential, so I am sure he will do it, he will fight for his place, and then it is up to him,” Ten Hag declared.
