A devastating fire outbreak on Friday engulfed the popular mobile phone market in Kano State, destroying property worth billions of naira.

Chairman of the market, Jamilu Gama, confirmed that the blaze raged for nearly seven hours, affecting more than 300 shops. The worst-hit section was where mobile phones and accessories are sold.

“There was a huge loss of property and assets. In a single shop, you could find items worth ₦500 million, and in some cases, up to ₦1 billion — all completely burnt,” Gama said.

He estimated the total value of destroyed goods at nearly ₦100 billion.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the inferno remains unknown. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the incident.
