A fire outbreak has been reported at the Ports and Cargo Terminal Berth 7 and 8 at Tin Can Island port, Lagos. The incident, which caused extensive damage, occurred when one of the cranes at the port caught fire, leading to significant repercussions for the MV Algeciras Express ship and its loaded containers.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the fire started while the crane was off-loading containers from the vessel, resulting in the vessel and several other containers being affected. The magnitude of the fire caused alarm, with millions of goods and assets at risk.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire outbreak was caused by a mechanical fault on the Liebherr crane and the MV Hapag. Firefighters valiantly battled the inferno for hours until they were able to bring it under control.
As of now, the management of Lagos Port has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the fire outbreak or the extent of the damages incurred.
