Five people have allegedly drowned in a boat mishap at Isa’i in Farar-Doka in Mariga local government area of Niger State.
It was gathered that the boat contained 10 people and capsized few minutes after takeoff from Isa’i.
It was learnt the occupants, from Unguwan dan Daudu, were heading to Bangi for naming ceremonies when the mishap occurred.
The incident was confirmed by the chairman of Mariga local government, Idris Ibrahim, who said five people were rescued when it capsized while one sustained injuries.
Idris, who expressed concerns over the incident, described it as unfortunate stating caution should be taken especially during rainfall.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) also confirmed the boat mishap.
The Director-General, Ibrahim Inga, said the incident occurred due to over flooding of the Farar Doka stream.
“The incident happened at Farar Doka stream due to over flood. They were nine on the canoe, four rescued, while five got missing but their bodies have been recovered and evacuated,” he said.
