Fofana breaks down in tears after limping off injured vs AC Milan

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana broke down in tears on the touchline after limping off with a worrying injury during their Champions League tie with AC Milan at Stamford Bridge.

The French centre-back was notably emotional as he trudged off slowly with a suspected knee problem following a challenge from Rafael Leao in the first half, which required him to be substituted.

Fofana saw his night cut short after being pulled down by Rafael Leao when galloping forward with the ball down the right flank and appeared to land awkwardly with his boot planted in the turf.

While the injury did not appear to be too serious at first, Fofana limped off for treatment and it soon became apparent after a few more minutes that he could not continue as he fell to the floor in agony.

And the emotions became too much to bear for the youngster as he could be seen fighting back tears after being comforted by the Chelsea medical staff when he was substituted. Trevoh Chalobah was brought on in his place with 38 minutes on the clock as Graham Potter sought to reshape his backline.

The 21-year-old had been enjoying his best performance since his £70million transfer from Leicester City this summer, opening the scoring with his first goal for the club after prodding home following a scramble in the Milan penalty area. He had also made some vital challenges on Rafael Leao to help keep Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal untroubled.
