Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana was pictured leaving Stamford Bridge on crutches as head coach Graham Potter admitted he is “concerned” over his injury during the 3-0 win over AC Milan.
Fofana broke down in tears after being substituted in the first half, having sustained an injury in a collision with Rafael Leao, and his exit after the game would have provided no assurances over his fitness.
Fofana saw his night end prematurely after picking up a suspected knee injury when he was fouled by AC Milan’s Leao in the 35th minute, with his studs getting caught in the grass as he was turned around by the Portuguese.
His injury had dealt a blow to the team after Fofana had opened the scoring earlier on with a neat finish inside the box after a scramble in the Milan penalty area. But his night ended on a disappointing note as he headed down the tunnel and looked visibly upset with his latest injury.
When asked for an update in his post-match interview, Potter confirmed Fofana would undergo a scan on Thursday to discover the extent of his injury, calling the incident the “most disappointing thing of the night”.
However, the 47-year-old later admitted he was concerned by the initial signs of the youngster’s problem and could only keep positive as they face an anxious wait to find out the seriousness of his injury.
“We don’t know yet, we scan tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I wouldn’t want to speculate on it now but we’re concerned and hope for the best,” Potter told reporters.
