David Olofu, the former Benue State Commissioner for Finance and Budget, has officially ended his long-standing membership with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing to a close over ten years of affiliation with the party.

IDOMA VOICE gathered that Olofu who held office under former Governor Samuel Ortom between 2015 and 2023—announced his resignation in a letter dated June 30, 2025. The letter was addressed to the Chairman of Edikwu Ward 2 in Apa Local Government Area and made public on Wednesday in Makurdi.

In his resignation letter, Olofu cited his constitutional right to freedom of association and the need to pursue broader political interests that align with the development of his local community and the state at large.

The letter reads in part:

“I write to inform you of my decision to resign as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from 30th June, 2025.

This decision has become necessary as I move to exercise my right to freedom of association enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I have done this in the interest of Edikwu Ward 2, Apa Local Government Area, Benue South Senatorial District, and indeed Benue State.”

Olofu, who also chaired the Forum of State Commissioners for Finance in Nigeria from 2019 to 2023, was a prominent technocrat in the Ortom-led government. He now leads a new political coalition gaining traction in Apa LGA.
