Former Kaduna Gov Makarfi resigns as PDP BoT Secretary

Former Kaduna State Governor and Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has officially resigned from his position, citing zoning considerations and the recent emergence of a National Chairman from his geopolitical zone as the reasons for stepping down.

In a resignation letter dated November 17, 2025, addressed to PDP BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi recalled that this decision comes just two months after he initially sought to resign via the BoT’s WhatsApp platform—a move that was temporarily deferred at the request of the BoT leadership.

“You may recall that about two months ago, I had resigned as Secretary of the Board and posted same on the Board’s WhatsApp platform,” Makarfi noted in the letter.

He explained that at the time, Wabara personally requested that he remain in office until the party concluded its national convention and appointed a substantive National Chairman.

“Mr. Chairman, you may recall that you personally urged me to stay on until after a convention that produced a Chairman,” he wrote.

Makarfi emphasized that his long-held belief is that the roles of BoT Secretary and National Chairman should not be held by individuals from the same geopolitical zone. With the new PDP Chairman now hailing from the North-West—the same zone as Makarfi—he said it was appropriate to step aside.

“The principal reason for my resignation then and now was, and is still, my belief that the National Chairman of the party and the Secretary should not come from the same geopolitical zone,” he stated.
“Now that a Chairman has emerged from the North West, where I come from, it is necessary to give him full space to do the needful.”

He described his decision as motivated by fairness and the need to avoid any perception of imbalance in the party’s leadership structure.

“Accordingly, I hereby formally resign as Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today, November 17th, 2025,” the letter read.

Makarfi expressed gratitude to Wabara and other BoT members for their cooperation, describing his tenure as marked by cordial and respectful relationships.

“I truly appreciate the very respectful relationship between us during my period as Secretary,” he said, adding, “I also appreciate all Board members for their support and good relationship that prevailed during my period as Secretary.”
