Former Minister of Finance, Onaolapo Soleye is dead

Dr. Onaolapo Soleye, the former Minister of Finance, has passed away at the age of 90, according to a statement released by his family on Wednesday. Soleye, who served as the finance minister during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), died in the early hours of the day, just four days after celebrating his 90th birthday on November 11, 2023.

The family’s statement expressed gratitude to God Almighty for Dr. Soleye’s long, impactful, and eventful life. Dr. Soleye had a distinguished career, rising to the position of an Associate Professor at the University of Ibadan, serving as the Commissioner for Works in Ogun State, and holding the esteemed position of Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Described as a true lover of God and humanity, Dr. Soleye’s commitment to church activities and his readiness to support and assist those around him reflected his character. The family acknowledged that the loss is not only theirs but a shared sorrow, as Dr. Soleye’s passing marks the departure of a figure who touched the lives of many.

The statement concluded by informing that burial details would be communicated by the family in due course, urging everyone to pray for the repose of Dr. Soleye’s soul and for God’s comfort to envelop his family and loved ones during this challenging time.
