Kevin Trapp, the goalkeeper for Eintracht Frankfurt, has chosen to remain with the Europa League champions from last year, despite receiving a bid from Manchester United.
Tom Heaton, a seasoned goalkeeper at Old Trafford, is the only current alternative to David de Gea, thus United sought out the 32-year-old as they attempt to bring in a new backup keeper and strong competition for De Gea.
Trapp was mentioned as a potential target earlier in the week, but Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer and Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka, have also been linked with the Red Devils. The club has also been monitoring Asmir Begovic, and Alex McCarthy.
Trapp, who moved to Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, received a four-year contract offer from United, but the Bundesliga team made it clear from the start that they had no interest in pursuing a transfer. While acknowledging that he was impressed by United’s interest, Trapp wrote on social media: “In the past few days, much has been reported about Manchester United’s interest. It is correct that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a world club. I hope everyone can understand that I am dealing with such an offer and thinking about it.
“Yesterday I informed the responsible persons of both clubs that I had decided for Eintracht. I experienced sensational things here with Eintracht and we made history together. The start of the season was bumpy, but I have absolute confidence in us.”
