Fresh crisis looms in Agatu over disputed pond

Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as Senate Minority Leader, has appealed for calm following rising tensions over a disputed pond in Agatu Local Government Area.

Intelligence reports indicate that a fresh crisis may be brewing over the ownership of the pond, which has been contested for more than 50 years. Allegations have emerged that one community attempted to use military forces to forcibly assert control over the pond, heightening fears of violent clashes.

The longstanding dispute is complicated by conflicting court rulings. A 1972 judgment under the then Benue-Plateau State allocated the land east of Idogo to the Egba community, while the western portion was designated for the Ologba community. However, a more recent 2024 ruling favored the Ologba community without taking the earlier judgment into consideration, further escalating tensions.

Senator Moro urged the communities to prioritize peace, emphasizing that internal conflicts could weaken the people of Zone C, particularly the Agatu population, amid security challenges from external aggressors. He encouraged dialogue, unity against common threats, and adherence to the rule of law.

The lawmaker also advised soldiers and other security agents to avoid being used as tools to destabilize communities, calling on them instead to protect lives and property while maintaining peace.
