Fresh update on Benue State University strike

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom has appealed to the striking teachers of the state-owned university to suspend their action so that the issue of earned allowances could be discussed.

Ortom who made the appeal while addressing members of Mbagba and Nanev communities in Ushongo and Kwande local government areas who paid him a visit in his office promised to look into the problem of unpaid earned allowances which started four years before he assumed office.
Although the governor disclosed that the problem has existed for six years, he however expressed his readiness to tackle it in the interest of the over 30,000 students of the university.

Ortom who reeled out his efforts in resolving the vexed issues said salaries of the Benue State University (BSU) staff have been paid up-to-date and assured that the plight of civil servants at the state and local government levels would be looked into during the period of emergency.

He said as soon as the situation improves, other activities of government would resume in full swing and consoled that the situation in Benue is better than some states which owe workers between 15 to 17 months arrears.

Earlier, leaders of the two communities had lauded the governor for his efforts at repositioning the key sectors including education, health security and infrastructure among others.
