The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the new Commissioner of Police for Rivers State. This move is part of a broader initiative aimed at strengthening security, combating violent crimes, and improving coordination of police operations across Nigeria.

The redeployment of these senior police officers is effective immediately, as per an official communication issued by the Inspector General of Police. The newly appointed Commissioners of Police are expected to demonstrate professional competence in their respective roles.

Olatunji Disu’s appointment as the Commissioner of Police for Rivers State follows recent events in the region. Governor Siminalayi Fubara accused certain police officers of attempting to harm him during his visit to assess the damage inflicted upon the State House of Assembly after an explosion that severely affected the legislative chambers.

The attempt to impeach Governor Fubara by the State House of Assembly led to protests by local youths, resulting in the arrest of 150 individuals and the tragic death of a youth due to a stray bullet fired by the police.

Recall that Olatunji Disu’s promotion to the rank of Commissioner of Police occurred only seven months ago, along with thirty-two other officers. He was subsequently appointed as the head of the security team attached to the Inspector General of Police’s office.

Prior to this appointment, Disu served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja and as the Deputy Head of the State Criminal Investigation Department for the Rivers Command.
