Steven Gerrard has dismissed rumors suggesting that Mason Greenwood would seek to resurrect his career at Al-Ettifaq, as reports indicate that Saudi Arabian clubs are inclined to avoid pursuing the forward.
The 21-year-old English international is currently seeking a new team following his departure from Manchester United on Monday, which came after a six-month internal investigation into his behavior was mutually agreed upon.
In response to a headline that implied Gerrard was contemplating a move for Greenwood, the former English midfielder, who now manages at Al-Ettifaq, straightforwardly addressed the matter on his Instagram story, stating, “Fake news.”
Both the BBC and Telegraph have referenced authoritative sources within the Saudi Pro League, suggesting that the gravity of the allegations surrounding Greenwood is likely to dissuade their clubs from signing him.
Greenwood had faced suspension by Manchester United in January 2022 amidst allegations involving a young woman, triggered by the posting of images and videos online. Charges, including attempted rape and assault, were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February of the same year. Nonetheless, reports indicating his potential retention by United were met with public outrage.
United’s management of the case drew criticism from their former captain Gary Neville, who characterized the situation as “pretty horrible.” Neville accused his former club of lacking leadership and prolonging the inquiry unnecessarily.
In a statement on Monday, Greenwood asserted that he was innocent of the accusations leveled against him. However, he did acknowledge making mistakes in his personal relationships and took responsibility for the circumstances that led to the social media posts.
United, in their statement, noted, “All those involved, including Mason, recognize the challenges associated with him resuming his career at Manchester United.”
According to information from the PA news agency, the club is collaborating with Greenwood’s family to identify an appropriate environment for his future career progression. Conversations are ongoing to find the most suitable resolution.
