Glory Akumbu Ogbonna, born on 25th December 1998, is a talented Nigerian footballer excelling as a defender for both Beşiktaş JK in Turkey and the Nigeria women’s national team. Her football journey began with Edo Queens in the Nigeria Women Football League before venturing into international play.
In July 2021, while with the Super Falcons of Nigeria during Aisha Buhari’s invitational tournament in Austria, Glory caught the attention of Umeå IK, a professional association football club in Sweden’s Elitettan, where she played until the end of the 2022 season.
After her stint in Sweden, Glory made a move to Turkey, signing with the Gaziantep-based league champion club, ALG Spor, on 13th August 2022. She made her debut in the prestigious 2022–23 UEFA Women’s Champions League on 18th August 2022. Subsequently, on 3rd February 2023, she joined Beşiktaş JK and continues to showcase her skills on the field.
Glory is renowned for her versatility on the pitch. While her primary position is left-back, she is equally adept at playing as a right-back, left-centre back, right-centre back, and defensive midfielder. Her ability to use both feet effectively adds an extra dimension to her gameplay.
On the international stage, Glory represented Nigeria at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2016 and 2018. Her exceptional performance at the 2018 WAFU Women’s Cup caught the eye of Nigerian head coach, Thomas Dennerby. This led to her inclusion in the squad for the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers and the main tournament.
In a testament to her talent and dedication, Glory was named in the 23-player Nigerian squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. As she continues to make her mark in the football world, fans eagerly anticipate the remarkable contributions she will bring to the sport in the years to come.
