Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, is expected to be arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, on charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who will serve as the vacation judge for the entire South-West region, fixed the arraignment date on Friday. The court has issued hearing notices to the counsel involved in the matter, according to Victor Opara (SAN), one of Emefiele’s lawyers. Joseph Daudu (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, is expected to lead Emefiele’s defense team.

The charges against Emefiele were filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) on July 13, 2023. They include the possession of a single-barreled shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a license, and the illegal possession of 23 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a license. These charges are in violation of Section 8 of the Firearms Act and are punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.
