A group known as Team New Nigeria (TNN) has sparked speculation about former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to politics in 2027 by displaying campaign posters across strategic locations in Kano State.
The posters, featuring Jonathan’s image and the slogan, “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr Goodluck Jonathan,” were seen at prominent spots such as the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road.
Led by Modibbo Yakubu Farakwai, TNN recently launched a harmonisation committee in Kano to advance its agenda. However, it remains unclear if Jonathan is directly involved, as his spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, was unavailable for comment.
Farakwai told journalists that the group’s activities were driven by widespread demand for new political leadership. “Nigerians are hungry for change and yearning for a new party with fresh faces to drive that change. They seek a transformation in governance at all levels,” he said.
TNN claims to have over 26 million registered supporters nationwide and is pursuing registration as a political party. “We aim to offer not just an alternative government but a new governance culture rooted in true democracy. Our nationwide rallies are part of a dialogue with Nigerians to address the emerging political situation,” Farakwai added.
He further disclosed that the group has already designed a flag, logo, constitution, and manifesto and is in talks with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to formalise its registration.
The development echoes a similar scenario in 2022, when supporters bought nomination forms for Jonathan under the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 elections. Jonathan later distanced himself from the move, despite a court ruling affirming his eligibility to run again, even after serving two terms as president.
