Gov Alia addresses Benue State’s financial challenges, security measures

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has shed light on the state’s strategy to tackle a substantial debt of N359 billion encompassing pensions, gratuities, and salaries owed to workers inherited by the current administration.

Speaking to State House correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Governor Alia outlined plans to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). A significant portion of this revenue will be channeled towards settling the accrued debt, aiming to empower deserving workers who are owed their rightful earnings.

Governor Alia expressed dismay over the magnitude of unpaid salaries, revealing that some local government employees were owed for up to five years. He emphasized his administration’s dedication to regularizing payments and ensuring that salaries are disbursed on the 25th of every month, in line with his pledge upon assuming office.

The governor also emphasized the state’s commitment to addressing the welfare of retiring workers by expediting the payment of gratuities and pensions, ensuring a streamlined process within four months of retirement.

Regarding security matters, Governor Alia reiterated the state’s proactive stance in collaboration with security agencies to maintain peace. He emphasized the identification and monitoring of potential troublemakers and affirmed the state’s dedication to fostering a peaceful environment for its citizens.

In addressing the issue of ranching, Governor Alia emphasized Benue State’s agricultural abundance, proposing an innovative approach to address the needs of both farmers and herders. He highlighted the intention to provide a conducive environment for herds to flourish, enabling farmers to produce nutritious fodder for cattle and generate revenue.

Governor Alia stressed that the ranching initiative in the state would prioritize collaboration and achieve a mutually beneficial scenario for all stakeholders involved.
