Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has given the green light for the implementation of a new retirement age and length of service for teachers recognized by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). According to the circular signed by the state’s Head of Service, Dr. Moses Ogbogbo Ode, this new implementation takes effect from May 2023, following the enactment of the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers by the Benue State House of Assembly during the previous administration.

Under the approved changes, the retirement age for teachers is now set at sixty-five (65) years, with a maximum length of service of forty (40) years, depending on whichever comes first. This implementation will apply to all Education officers and Teachers, eliminating any previous boundaries.

Those who are not interested in the elongation scheme can still apply for retirement according to existing Public Service Rules. The new Harmonized Retirement Age Law 2023 takes precedence over any previous guidelines on the subject, and all Education Officers, Teachers, and the general public are advised to take note of this significant change.
