Gov Fubara begins payment of ₦85,000 minimum wage for Rivers state workers

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced the commencement of the ₦85,000 minimum wage for state workers, despite challenges posed by what he called “enemies of the state” attempting to deprive his administration of necessary funds.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Fund at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Governor Fubara emphasized that the implementation of the new wage policy has brought much-needed relief to civil servants in the state.

He expressed that the true achievement of governance lies in improving the welfare of the people, highlighting that workers who previously earned between ₦70,000 and ₦80,000 now take home between ₦120,000 and ₦140,000 under the new wage structure.

Governor Fubara reaffirmed his dedication to leading the state with God’s guidance, stating, “Only God gives power.” He also praised security agencies for their support, despite external pressures, and encouraged them to continue their efforts in maintaining peace.

In his remarks, the governor announced a ₦40 million donation to the Nigerian Legion, doubling the previous year’s contribution. He noted his personal connection to the cause as the son of a military officer, acknowledging the sacrifices made by fallen heroes and their families. While recognizing that the state can never fully compensate for these sacrifices, he assured continued support for their families.

Fubara also addressed concerns raised by the acting chairman of the Nigerian Legion in the state regarding the lack of access to 50 employment slots promised to the children of fallen soldiers. He clarified that civil service employment had been temporarily suspended in favor of recruiting professionals, including over 2,000 doctors and plans for 1,000 teachers.

On scholarships, Governor Fubara revealed that the state is sponsoring students in professional fields, including 150 indigenes at PAMO University of Medical Sciences and a number at Wigwe University. He urged patience from the legionnaires, assuring them that scholarship applications would be processed soon.

Before his address, Governor Fubara observed a minute of silence to honor the late Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, and the former chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Rivers State, Charles Hart.
