The Ijaw Nation Development Group (INDG), a pan-Ijaw organization, issued a stern warning to political actors involved in the alleged impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, cautioning that such a plot could incite unrest, jeopardize security, and hinder development in the state.
This warning follows a reported arson attack and the destruction of public assets at the Rivers State House of Assembly complex the previous day.
The INDG expressed deep concern not only for the peace and security of the state following the attack on Sunday night but also for the fact that Governor Fubara, who has been in office for only five months, has become the target of a political coup.
Speaking on behalf of the group, President of the INDG, Prof. Prosper Ayawei, called upon stakeholders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful resolution to any existing disagreements without plunging the state into chaos.
Prof. Ayawei emphasized, “Rivers State, which had become a good example of where democracy works with exemplary infrastructural projects under former Governor Wike, should not be upended into a festering sore of violent clashes due to ego and greed.”
The group further urged all stakeholders in Rivers State to stand firmly behind Governor Fubara against any anti-democratic forces and called for peaceful resolution. Additionally, they called on the Speaker and the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider their decision to suspend the Majority Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and their notice of impeachment against Governor Fubara.
The INDG made it clear that the Ijaw nation is closely monitoring the developments in Rivers State and is prepared to protect the mandate given to Governor Fubara, who is an Ijaw man, if necessary.
