Gov. Ortom advocates monitoring, evaluation for community policing

By Jimin Geoffrey

Governor Samuel Ortom has called for strict monitoring and evaluation for the community Policing initiative to ensure its success in the country and North Central Region in particular.

He made the call at the North Central Nigeria Police Regional Security Summit on the theme: “Strategic Partnership for Effective Community Policing in the North Central Zone/FCT,” held at the Conference hall of Ta’al International Hotel Lafia.

The Governor stated that the policy needed to be encouraged to avoid the temptation of exploring other alternative ways of securing lives and property as being done in other regions of the country.

He commended the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Adamu for his value addition to the Police Service, stressing that the rule of law must be upheld by all to avoid the triumph of impunity in the country.

The Governor warned Miyetti Allah to note that they are not above the law, pointing out that it was wrong to allow foreigners access into the country who come in mainly to cause trouble for Nigerians, stressing that open grazing of cattle is nolonger feasible and should be discouraged by all.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu in a welcome address, said the meeting was aimed at interacting with communities across the region with a view to encouraging community policing for improved security of lives and property in the North Central Zone and Nigeria at large.

Other governors of the North Central Region who spoke at the summit, lamented the proliferation of arms, banditry and criminality in the region, saying engagement with religious and community leaders for inclusive community policing and early warning signals would help to a large extent in combating the menace.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State particularly advised Fulani herdsmen against banditry and criminality.
