Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, revealed plans to address the lingering debt of N359 billion in pensions, gratuities, and salaries owed to workers inherited by the state. He expressed this during a discussion with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Alia highlighted a deliberate effort to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), with a significant portion directed towards settling the accrued debt, ultimately empowering deserving workers. He emphasized the gravity of the debt situation, particularly in local governments, where some individuals were owed up to five years.
Alia pledged to ensure the prompt payment of salaries to state workers by the 25th of every month, a commitment fulfilled since his assumption of office. He emphasized the importance of timely payment for workers’ sustenance, and his administration’s dedication to clear the arrears gradually.
In addition, the governor shared insights into promoting ranching in the state, aligning with its status as the country’s food basket. He emphasized the innovative approach taken to cater to both farmers and herders, providing a conducive environment for cattle to thrive while ensuring a prosperous outcome for farmers through fodder provision and revenue generation.
