Governor Alia condemns politicisation of security crisis in Benue

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has strongly denounced the politicization of the security crisis within the state, calling on those involved—both within and outside the state—to cease this damaging practice.

Speaking during a visit to Ityulugh District, Gbajir, in the Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, where a clash between armed herdsmen and bandits resulted in the tragic deaths of nearly 50 individuals, including innocent residents, the governor attributed the bloody clash to the actions of armed bandits. These bandits reportedly rustled cattle from retreating herders and kidnapped some of their members.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia commended the proactive efforts of security agencies in the area. However, he highlighted the challenge of eradicating insecurity due to the shielding of criminal elements by locals in the region.

Governor Alia criticized Senator Emmanuel Udende, representing Benue North East Senatorial District, for what he described as an incomplete presentation of the facts leading up to the crisis in the area. He urged the senator, who hails from the region, to expose any individuals sponsoring militia groups in the area.

The governor pointed out that the primary casualties of the armed herders’ attack in the area were members of the militia, with a few civilian casualties. This, he emphasized, raises questions about why a particular village and household were specifically targeted.

Addressing those potentially sponsoring militia groups, Governor Alia called for restraint, highlighting that these actions endanger their own communities and families. He demanded accountability from those who have misrepresented the situation and incited unrest.

Assuring the return of peace to Ukum, Governor Alia called on politicians inciting violence and those sponsoring militia groups to cease their activities. He stressed the need for the state and local governments to take charge of security in the area.
