Popular Nigerian musicians Tuface Idibia and Zaaki Azzay as well as members of the National Assembly from Benue State have described the award presented to Governor Samuel Ortom by The Sun Publishing Limited as a well-deserved honour.
Speaking shortly after the management of The Sun led by the Managing Director, Mr Onuoha Ukeh presented the award of Courage in Leadership Award to the Governor.
In his remarks, Tuface described Governor Ortom as a man who has stood for Benue people and has demonstrated selflessness in governance. He stated that the award was a well-deserved honour.
Also speaking, Zaaki Azzay congratulated the Governor, saying the award was a befitting recognition of his stewardship of Benue State.
Speaking on behalf of the National Assembly members at the event, the member representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon John Dyegh said as a member of the All Progressives Congress, he was the right person to give an unbiased assessment of Governor Ortom’s performance which he described as laudable.
Rt. Hon Dyegh said Governor Ortom had proven to be a pragmatic leader whose sterling performance has continued to attract national and international recognition. He congratulated the Governor and urged him to sustain the people-oriented leadership style.
While presenting the award earlier, the Managing Director of the Sun, Mr Ukeh said the Governor merited the honour on account of his administration’s exemplary style of leadership in Benue State over the years.
He commended Governor Ortom for sacrificing his political career to save his people by pushing for the establishment of the Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law and ensuring its strict enforcement.
Responding, Governor Ortom said he accepted the award due to The Sun’s pedigree as well as its critical and objective and balanced reportage.
The Governor also cited the role The Sun has played in the coverage of attacks on farmers by militia herdsmen and alluded to the media organisation’s integrity and responsible style of news writing.
He dedicated the award to Benue people who he noted have continued to stand by his administration to succeed at its difficult moments and thanked the National Assembly members and Benue celebrities among others who attended the ceremony to identify with him.
