GTBank website goes offline amid suspected hackers attack

The website domain of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has become inaccessible, prompting suspicions among Nigerians that the commercial bank may have been targeted by hackers.

The report revealed that the GTBank website, gtbank.com, was no longer reachable.

This issue emerged just a day after the domain was renewed for another five years, extending its validity from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029, according to various online domain tracking platforms.

No hacker group has yet claimed responsibility for the alleged attack on the website.

According to Peoples Gazette, the suspected attackers might have set up a counterfeit version of the website to steal customers’ sensitive information through phishing.

A cybersecurity expert familiar with Nigeria’s banking sector suggested that the issue might involve a compromise of the bank’s login credentials, rather than the domain being hijacked for resale.

Despite the website disruption, the bank’s mobile applications on both Android and iOS were still operational at the time of this report.

GTBank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, serves millions of customers across Nigeria and other African countries.
