Some armed individuals abducted five students from a college in Enugu State, southeast Nigeria. The attackers reportedly targeted the students as they were leaving the Enugu State College of Health Technology in the Oji River Council Area.
Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, noting that it occurred on Thursday evening.
Mr. Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, refuted earlier reports claiming that a “countless number of students” had been abducted, calling such reports “false and misleading.”
He explained that after receiving a tip-off about the attack, police operatives quickly responded, rescuing two of the abducted students, while three others remain missing.
The police have launched intensive operations to locate and rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the abductors.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a full-scale operation to secure the safe release of the abducted students.
The incident is part of a broader trend of rising abductions for ransom across the state and the wider Southeast region.
On the same day as the student abductions, a medical doctor, Innocent Nwoga, who serves as the medical director of Ukehe General Hospital, was kidnapped along the Egede-Ninth Mile-Nsukka Road in Enugu State.
Similarly, last week, gunmen abducted three people in Nkpologwu Community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. As of this report, none of the victims have been released.
