Gunmen hit Ekori police station, cart way AK-47 rifles

Unknown gunmen have attacked the Ekori police station in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, carting away weapons.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer at the Cross River State Police Command, Igri Ewa, confirmed this on Monday.

Ewa told journalists in Calabar that gunmen suspected to be cultists had invaded the police station.

He said the Police have launched an investigation into the matter, adding that the Command will issue a statement on the attack soon.

Following the attack, a number of AK-47 guns were reportedly carted away by the gunmen while they also manhandled policemen on duty.

An eyewitness told reporters that “the gunmen scared away the officers on duty, beat one to stupor and made away with the AK-47 rifle of the policeman.”

It was learnt that the attack led to the closure of the Ekori Police Station indefinitely and officers asked to move to Ugep Divisional Police Station, at the local government headquarters.
