Gunmen kill medical doctor at UBTH
Tragedy struck in Benin City, Edo State, as a medical doctor identified simply as Alex was shot dead at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Dr. Alex, who worked in the Physiotherapy Department of the hospital, was reportedly attacked by gunmen, causing panic among health workers and patients who fled for safety. The incident sparked a protest by several hospital staff members who condemned the growing insecurity within the medical facility.
UBTH’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the killing and stated that the hospital management had alerted security agencies, who are now investigating the matter.
In a separate incident on the same day, two members of a local vigilance group lost their lives in a fatal accident along the Benin-Lagos Expressway, near the Ugbowo main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred around noon when a truck crushed the two men, who were riding a motorcycle. Their bodies have been deposited at a morgue in Benin.
These incidents have heightened tensions in the city, with residents calling for improved security and traffic regulation enforcement.
