Hardship: Gowon reveals what he told President Tinubu in Aso Rock

Former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, paid a visit to the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday for discussions with President Bola Tinubu concerning the current economic situation in Nigeria.

Following his meeting with President Tinubu, Gowon addressed journalists, acknowledging the criticisms directed towards Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized that such criticisms were typical for Nigerian leaders and urged citizens to grant the President sufficient time to tackle the prevailing challenges.

Gowon’s visit also centered on the political crisis within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), particularly in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, which are now under military control. He disclosed that he provided valuable insights to President Tinubu on how to address these issues effectively.

In his remarks to the press, Gowon highlighted the importance of his visit, stating, “This is my first visit to Mr. President since the inauguration… We had a very interesting meeting, and I’m sure some of you have read reports that I refused to attend the ECOWAS conference… No, that is not the case. I think there was a miscommunication.”

Gowon also shared his perspective on the economic challenges facing Nigeria, advising patience and understanding. He remarked, “I think the government is trying their best to deal with the various problems of the country… Nigerians, we’ve got to give the president time to get things really done.”

Reflecting on his own leadership experience during the Nigerian Civil War, Gowon emphasized the need to persevere in the face of criticism and the complexities of governance.

The meeting between Gowon and President Tinubu underscores the ongoing efforts to address pressing issues and foster stability in Nigeria and the ECOWAS region.
