US-Based Zimbabwean Woman on Trial for Alleged Abuse of 16-Year-Old Boy
A 33-year-old Zimbabwean woman living in the United States, Zvikomborero Maria Makedenge, has begun trial in Harare over allegations that she unlawfully engaged in conduct involving a 16-year-old boy in Glen View.
According to prosecutors, the incident allegedly occurred on August 2, during Makedenge’s visit to Zimbabwe. Authorities say the teenager later informed his sister, who alerted their mother, leading to the matter being reported to police and resulting in Makedenge’s arrest.
She was released on US$100 bail, and her trial opened this week at the Harare Magistrates Court.
The case has drawn widespread public attention, particularly following Zimbabwe’s recent legal reforms that officially set the age of consent at 18.
Legal experts have emphasized that under current law, minors cannot provide valid consent, regardless of assumptions about their maturity or opinions circulating online linked to the viral video associated with the case.
The trial is ongoing.
