‘He was lonely’ – Sister explains why suspended Delta Catholic Priest left priesthood for marriage

Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, has renounced his celibacy vows and priestly calling to marry Dora Chichah in Dallas, USA.

The marriage took place on December 29, 2024, at the Stream of Joy Church, despite the priest’s request in November 2024 to be released from his canonical obligations.

Following the marriage, which was reportedly filmed and widely shared on social media, the Warri Diocese suspended Fr. Oghenerukevwe from his priestly duties. The suspension, outlined in a statement dated January 16, 2025, noted that the priest incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension, as per Canon 1394 S1, due to his actions.

According to the Diocese, Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s request to be freed from his canonical obligations had not been processed before his wedding. They stated that he had been asked to provide the necessary documents to begin the process but proceeded to marry without completing the formalities. As a result, the Diocese decreed that he was prohibited from presenting himself as a priest in any capacity.

Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s sister, Mary Okanatotor, defended her brother’s decision, explaining that his mental health struggles and feelings of loneliness played a significant role in his choice to marry. She emphasized that the family had not been physically present to support him during his challenges. Mary clarified that the marriage was not secret, as her brother had informed the Diocese of his decision.

The Diocese stated that Fr. Oghenerukevwe could petition for the revocation or amendment of the suspension, provided he showed a willingness to reform.

Fr. Oghenerukevwe, who hails from Ewu Kingdom in Delta State, was ordained as a priest in 2008. The Church has expressed prayers for his reflection and reconciliation.
