Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared his determination not to yield ground in the ongoing power struggle with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Governor Fubara, who had a falling out with Wike, his predecessor, is currently facing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, who is an ally of Wike, and several other members of the House, have taken steps to impeach the governor.
In the midst of this political turmoil, Wike’s supporters took the controversial step of suspending the Majority Leader of the House, Ehie Edison, who is believed to be loyal to Governor Fubara.
Following a meeting between governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike reiterated his steadfast commitment to the ongoing confrontation, stating that he would persist in his efforts even if “heaven falls.”
Wike stated, “You know I will not agree. If heaven will come down, let heaven come down so that everybody will be at rest. Anybody who knows me knows too well: what I’ll never take is threat. You know I will not agree. If heaven will come down, let heaven come down so that everybody will be at rest. Let’s do things right. He said they should bring N20 billion every month; that’s politics. But nobody said this when I was fighting. If you like, accuse me.”
Despite reports of President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to resolve the crisis, Wike’s resolve remains unshaken. The political upheaval surrounding the planned impeachment has led to protests by party supporters in Port-Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State, resulting in chaos within the state.
