Two police officers from the Anambra State Command have been killed by hoodlums in Nnewi during a gunfight on Thursday morning.
Reports indicate that the officers were engaged in a shootout with the assailants when the hoodlums hurled an improvised explosive device (IED) at them, resulting in the tragic deaths of two officers.
The State Police Command has confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command’s spokesperson, stated that a manhunt for the attackers is currently underway.
“Joint Security Forces have commenced operations to apprehend the armed men responsible for the murder of two police operatives during investigation activities in the early hours of today, October 3, 2024, at Uruagu, Nnewi North,” Ikenga said.
“Preliminary information indicates that the armed assailants opened fire upon seeing the police officers and threw an improvised explosive device into their operational vehicle, which subsequently caught fire. Tragically, two officers lost their lives in the incident.
“The Command urges the public, particularly eyewitnesses, to assist with the ongoing police operations in the area.
