A joint operation conducted by the Port Harcourt Local Government Authority Area Security Watch and the police has led to the arrest of 12 suspected internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo boys,” who were allegedly involved in the burial of a newborn baby alive at the Andoni waterfront in Eagle Island, the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria.

The operation was carried out based on a tip-off received by the vigilante group in collaboration with the Rivers State Neighbourhood Watch. Residents reported witnessing a group of young men engaging in incantations and digging the ground near the waterfront.

Victor Ohaji, Chairman of the PLGA Security Watch and Chief Security Officer of Eagle Island, informed the press about the incident. He shared that upon receiving the information, he alerted the Azikiwe Police Division in Diobi, Port Harcourt, and notified officials from the state neighborhood agency.

After mobilizing his team, the suspected “Yahoo boys” had already left the location when they arrived. However, upon closer inspection, they discovered evidence of disturbed soil. Ohaji instructed his team to excavate the area, and to their horror, they uncovered the lifeless body of a newborn baby boy.

Subsequently, the police and neighborhood watchmen collaborated to search for the suspects. The suspects were spotted exiting a hotel, and when confronted, they attempted to flee. A pursuit ensued, resulting in the arrest of all twelve suspects. They were taken into custody along with the deceased baby.

One of the arrested suspects reportedly bragged about his father being a Major General, claiming immunity from consequences. The suspects were handed over to the police, who have begun investigations into the incident.

The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident and the subsequent arrest of the suspects. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.

Human rights advocate Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, condemned the incident as a display of extreme cruelty and called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure prosecution. He commended the security operatives for their swift response and cooperation with the vigilante group, which led to the arrest of the suspects.
