The President recognized Ogunbanjo’s significant contributions as one of Nigeria’s most renowned corporate lawyers. Dr. Ogunbanjo passed away at the age of 99, as confirmed by his son, Senate Tokunboh Ogunbanjo.
In an official statement released by Senator Ogunbanjo, it read: “With gratitude to God Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of our great Father who lived for the children, the family, the Church, the community, and the entire Nation – Chief C. O. Ogunbanjo, OFR, (The Great Baba Ijo of the Church of the Epiphany, Erunwon) as he passed into glory yesterday night, 7th October, 2023.”
President Tinubu, through his Media Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, shared in the mourning with family members, colleagues, friends, and well-wishers of the late legal luminary. Dr. Ogunbanjo’s multifaceted roles as an industrialist, corporate lawyer, and philanthropist were acknowledged, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal and business communities.
Tinubu paid tribute to Pa Ogunbanjo for his unwavering dedication to various causes, including grassroots community development and advocacy for peaceful co-existence among Nigerians. He urged all those mourning the loss of this distinguished figure to reflect on his extensive contributions and carry forward the ideals he stood for.
In Tinubu’s words: “Chief Chris Ogunbanjo will be remembered for his extraordinary life of service to his community and the promotion of best business practices as a corporate lawyer of untarnished repute. His contributions to the economic development of Nigeria and commercial law practice in our country will endure.”
The President offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Pa Ogunbanjo’s soul and divine comfort to his family and loved ones over this irreparable loss.
Dr. Christopher Oladipo Ogunbanjo, born on December 12th, 1923, in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Nigeria, was a prominent corporate lawyer, businessman, and philanthropist. He hailed from the distinguished Ogunbanjo family in Erunwon-Ijebu. He commenced his legal practice in 1950, partnering in the law firm Samuel, Chris & Michael, later founding Chris Ogunbanjo & Co, a pivotal platform for many legal luminaries in Nigeria.
