Suspected cultists Wednesday night attacked and killed a student of the Benue state University (BSU) Makurdi, Mr. Isaac Nater Nyiyongo at the university main campus.
The attack, according to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Msugh Kembe, took place around 7:30pm
Briefing newsmen Thursday over the incident, Professor Kembe said the murdered student last registered in the 2016/2017 as a 200 Level student in the Department of Political Science.
Kembe stated that the management was saddened that the incident was happening on the university campus, which has over the recent past achieved a high standard of peace, security and stability even in the smooth running of the academic calendar.
He disclosed that the two persons out of the assailants who carried out the attack on the student were arrested and preliminary investigation indicated that they were not students.
“We are aware that two suspected masterminds of the criminal incident have been arrested and are assisting security agents with useful information, with preliminary investigations suggesting they are not students of the university.
“I regret to state here that those criminal elements who carried out the crime on our campus took advantage of the strike action announced by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“But we will not let a few criminal elements distort the vision for the establishment of this proud ivory tower,” he said.
He further said the institution had resolved to employ strict security measures on campus, adding that staff, students and visitors must henceforth have to properly identify themselves while on campus.
According to Kembe, since assumption of office as vice-chancellor of the institution, the university management has been on the same page and unified in tackling the menace of cultism and other related vices among students population on campus.
Meanwhile, the Benue state command police spokesperson, Catherine Sewuese Anene has confirmed the killing of the student on campus by suspected cultists, affirming that two persons had been arrested in connection with the incident and helping the authorities with useful information.
