How I played at AFCON 2023 with injury – Troost-Ekong reveals

Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed the challenges he faced while playing through injury at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Troost-Ekong, aged 30, sustained the injury during Nigeria’s second group game against the hosts. Although he missed the team’s last group game against Guinea-Bissau, he displayed remarkable resilience by returning to play every minute of his country’s remaining four games in the competition.

The PAOK Salonica defender from Greece played a pivotal role, scoring three crucial goals for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023 and earning the prestigious title of Player of the Tournament.

In an interview with CNN World Sports, Troost-Ekong detailed how he managed to cope with the injury.

“I had a torn bicep femoris, which essentially affects the outer part of the hamstring. It occurred during the tournament, and I believe I initially suffered a minor tear in the second group stage game against Cote d’Ivoire. Despite the setback, I persevered and continued playing. However, after the final match, I underwent another MRI, which revealed the injury was more severe,” he explained.

“Playing with the injury was quite painful, and I was unable to train properly after the second group game. I relied on ice to alleviate the swelling. In preparation for each game, I could only manage about half an hour of training the day before. During matches, a combination of painkillers and adrenaline helped me endure. However, the day after each game, the injury became more apparent, and I struggled to walk.”

Troost-Ekong underwent surgery for the injury last month and is anticipated to return to action in May, demonstrating his commitment to recovery and his enduring dedication to the sport.
