How King Sunny Ade ‘slapped’ backup singer for trying to pick his money at concert

Legendary Nigerian Juju-Afro Pop singer and songwriter, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, slapped a backup singer that tried to pick up money during his concert.

In a viral video that was shared on Instagram on Monday, the singer was seen jokingly slapping and kicking a backup singer that was seen picking the money that was sprayed on him.

The singer went ahead to grab the money and stuff it in his pocket.

King Sunny Ade is regarded as one of the first African pop musicians to gain international recognition and has been described as one of the most influential musicians of all time.

He formed his own backing band in 1967, eventually known as African Beats. After achieving national success in Nigeria during the 1970s and founding his own independent label, Sunny Ade signed to Island Records in 1982 and achieved international success with the albums Juju Music (1982) and Synchro System (1983); the latter earned him a Grammy nomination, a first for a Nigerian artist.

King Sunny Ade’s 1998 album, Odu, also got a Grammy nomination. He currently serves as chairperson of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria.
