The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), has rescued a 15-years-old girl who was chained by the neck and limbs and locked away in their house by her mother, in Umuokoro Obinkita, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

Her freedom was felicitated by an NGO, Vicar Hope Foundation and the Child Protection Network. A source in NSCDC said they got a tip-off and support from them.

According to the Abia NSCDC spokesperson, Mr. Ndukwe, the rescue was achieved after 24 hours of surveillance mounted at the victim’s home.

Ndukwe said that the State Commandant of the Civil Defense Corps had already directed a thorough investigation of the incident.

In an interview with newsmen, the mother insisted that her daughter had a mental challenge and that she had to chain her to stop her from roaming off.

The girl has been taken into custody by the wife of the governor Nkechi Ikpeazu who runs Vicar Hope Foundation.

Mrs Ikpeazu, who is also the chairman of the state action committee on gender-based violence, said her foundation took charge of the girl to aid expert psychiatric evaluation to determine her condition and provide treatment.

Speaking through her chief press secretary Chika Ojiegbe, the governor’s wife said there was no reason for the inhumane treatment meted to the teenager by her parent.

She said the girl’s parent should have solicited medical help if the girl had poor mental health.
