The Benue State Police Command has arrested a police sergeant, James Aondona, over the death of a trailer driver, Aondohumba Terkula.
The policeman had on Sunday allegedly shot the driver for refusing to part with money demanded by cops at a roadblock along Katsina-Ala.
An eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, said the trailer driver was heading for the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State when the incident happened.
He said, “An argument started following the driver’s refusal to pay the money asked from him by police officers at the roadblock and one of them shot and killed him.”
The state police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, in a statement, said the culprit had been arrested.
She noted that preliminary investigation revealed that the sergeant was posted to an observation point at Ngibo, Kastina-Ala LGA.
“He decided to engage in an altercation with Mr Aondohumba Terkula (the deceased) which led to loss of life. The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital, Kastina-Ala.
“While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State, Wale Abass, condemned the unprofessional conduct of the officer involved and ordered that further investigation be carried out.’’
