Germany launched a new online visa application portal in January 2025, aimed at simplifying the visa process for international travelers.
This initiative is designed to make it easier for applicants from countries without a visa waiver agreement with Germany to apply for entry permits, reducing the complexity of the previous paper-based system.
Previously, applicants had to complete lengthy paper forms and submit them to a German embassy or consulate, often located far from their home country.
Starting this January, the new application process is streamlined into three simple steps:
1. Online Application
Applicants begin by completing an online form through the Consular Services Portal, customized for the specific type of visa they are applying for. They must also upload supporting documents such as scanned passport copies and proof of qualifications.
2. Preliminary Review
The German consular mission will conduct an initial review of the application. If any additional information is required, applicants will be notified via the portal.
3. In-Person Appointment
Applicants will schedule an appointment at their nearest German consulate or embassy, where their identity will be verified, original documents will be reviewed, and biometric data such as photos and fingerprints will be taken.
The portal also allows applicants to track the progress of their visa application and use the Visa Navigator tool to determine the correct visa type for their travel needs.
